Lesson information:

As you watch the video below, look out for these learning points:

  • A needs analysis includes: identifying the problem that needs to be addressed, understanding the learner, defining the learning objectives, and planning the learning solution
  • Learner personas and empathy maps can help you to capture the breadth of your learners
  • Define learning objectives based on the problem that needs to be addressed and the discrepancy between where learners are and where you want them to be

Problem

β†’ Identify the problem (challenge, learning target, etc.) that needs to be addressed, so we can think about how to assist and overcome these barriers

  • Use a technique like: Action Mapping Process, 5 Whys Technique, Fishbone Analysis, Task Analysis
  • This is also the stage to determine whether interactive learning conversations are a good fit for solving the problem
    • Are contextual cues important? Are interpersonal stakes high?

Learner

β†’ Determine who this training is for!

  • Create Learner Personas or Empathy Maps
    • Capture information about your target learners (including: job roles & responsibilities, experiences, characteristics, needs, dispositions, current state of knowledge or skills or attitudes surrounding the topic that needs to be covered)
      • To gather this info, you might try: interviews, surveys, focus groups, questionnaires or assessments

Learning Objectives

β†’ Learning Objectives are what learners should be able to do at the completion of the Interactive Learning Conversation activities

  • Objectives should be S.M.A.R.T. β‡’ specific, measurable, achievable, relevant, and time-bound
    • To clearly define your Learning Objectives: analyze the gap between your learner's current abilities and the desired state of the behaviors

Learning Solution

β†’ Create a plan to target your Learning Objectives

  • Think about the common scenarios that your target learners face, to choose a context for the Interactive Learning Conversation

  • Intro to needs analysis. So, a needs analysis is a process that involves gathering information about a problem and the learners in order to identify the specific learning needs.
  • Really the goal of a needs analysis is to identify gaps between current and desired states, define learning objectives, and develop a plan to address this gap through designing learning materials.
  • So let's discuss some strategies to help you accomplish these components of a needs analysis. It's important that we first understand the problem.
  • We wanna identify what the problem is that needs to be addressed. This is likely a challenge the business is facing or other learning target needing attention.
  • And once we know what this problem is, we can then begin to think about how to assist and overcome these barriers.
  • Now, Kathy Moore provides an excellent action mapping process to collaborate with stakeholders and subject matter experts to help you determine what the problem is, what actions lead to addressing this problem.
  • And there are some other methods that you might also might want to try to identify the problem, which include the five wise technique, fishbone analysis, and a task analysis.
  • And really at this stage, you also wanna determine whether interactive learning conversations are a good fit for solving the business problem that you are trying to solve.
  • Interactive learning conversations are particularly beneficial when contextual cues are really important, when behaviors are the type that need to be developed with repeated practice and consistent practice.
  • And when interpersonal stakes are high and result in heightened emotions or stress, understanding the learner is a key component of a needs analysis.
  • So you wanna determine who this training is for. And this might involve gathering information about learners job roles, their responsibilities, their experiences.
  • We suggest creating a couple of learner personas or empathy maps to capture the breadth of your target learners. Be sure to include information about their characteristics, their needs, their dispositions, their current state of knowledge or skills or attitudes surrounding the topic.
  • That's to be covered. And this can be done through a variety of methods, which include interviews, surveys, focus groups, questionnaires, or assessments.
  • You'll then want to analyze the gap between your learner's current abilities and the desired state of the behaviors that we initially identified that would then address the problem.
  • And you'd wanna use this discrepancy to clearly define the learning objectives for the scope of your interactive learning conversations. Now, learning objectives are what learners should be able to do at the completion of the interactive learning conversation activities.
  • These objectives should be specific, measurable, achievable, relevant, and time bound. Next, based on your needs analysis, you'll want to create a plan to target your learning objectives through the design and development of these interactive learning conversations.
  • Now, because you've already identified the behaviors learners need to be able to perform, you can now think about the common scenarios that learners face that you may want to use to set the context of these interactive learning conversations so that learners can practice applying this target behavior inauthentic contexts.
