Lesson information:
As you watch the video below, look out for these learning points:
- The 5 Learner-Centric Considerations include: prior experience, relevance, authenticity, engagement, and transfer
- The 5 Retention and Skill Development considerations include: moving from concrete to abstract, feedback, productive failure, scaffolding, and challenge
In this lesson, 10 principles are discussed for designing Interactive Learning Conversations. These principles are divided into two categories: Learner-Centric Considerations and Retention and Skill Development Considerations.
Learner-Centric Considerations include:
- Prior experience: Build upon the learner's existing knowledge, skills, and abilities.
- Relevance: Ensure the learning conversations are meaningful and applicable to the learner.
- Authenticity: Create experiences that mirror real-world situations and goals.
- Engagement: Develop interesting and captivating interactive conversations.
- Transfer: Design conversations that help learners apply their knowledge to new situations.
Retention and Skill Development Considerations include:
- Concrete to abstract: Start with didactic lessons, then move on to application and practice.
- Formative Feedback: Determine the type, timing, and format of feedback provided to learners.
- Productive Failure: Encourage learners to learn from their mistakes and try again.
- Scaffolding: Consider how you “chunk” content and provide learners with support.
- Challenge: Design for an appropriate level of difficulty, staying within the zone of proximal development.
