Lesson information:

As you read through the lesson information below, look out for these learning points:

  • Learning Objective formula
  • Key Learning Points

Learning Objectives

→ Are statements that define the intended outcome or final results of the learning. [1]

  • They define the competencies the learners have to achieve after completing the learning experience[3].

In order for learning objectives to be clear, consistent, and measurable → a Learning Objective should contain a verb (an action) and an object (usually a noun).[2]

Use this formula:

Learning Objective = Action Verb + Object (Condition + Standard)

  • Action Verb: What the learner will do as a result of training.
    • The action verb generally refers to [actions associated with] the intended cognitive process.
  • Object: The object generally describes the knowledge students are expected to acquire or construct.
    • Objects are more measurable when they include:
      • Condition: The condition (and constraints) under which the action will be completed
      • Standard: The extent at which the learner will be able to complete the action (degree of precision)
  • Examples:
    1. Learners will be able to identify customer needs by strategically gathering information while engaging in a customer service conversation.
    2. Learners will be able to recommend solutions that will compliment and bring value to the customer’s lifestyle.

Key Learning Points

→ Are the specific ideas or concepts that we want the user to learn about in a learning solution.

  • We can think of them as “operationalized learning objectives”.
  • They are specific behaviors we are looking for the learner to demonstrate within the Interactive Learning Conversation.
  • Examples:
    1. Learners will employ active listening and inquiry techniques to gather target information from a customer.
    2. Learners will propose a recommendation to the customer that fits with the information gathered about the customer’s lifestyle.
