Lesson information:

As you watch the video, look out for these learning points:

  • The final scoring takes place after the narrative is finalized, though draft scoring during the writing process helps to ensure learning objectives, key learning points, and skills are addressed
  • Discrete scoring nodes connected to decision node response options enable unique skill point awarding for individual response options
  • The Best Path yields the most skills and skill points because overall performance is based off of the best path

Scoring refers to assigning skills and skill points to decision node response options in order to track a learner's performance in Interactive Learning Conversations.

→ Scoring typically occurs after the full branch narrative is finalized

  • The process of Scoring involves analyzing each response option within a decision node and assigning an individual scoring node based on the skills present and their respective point values.
  • The extent to which skills are executed within a specific response option determines the point values.
  • It's important to note that the best path yields the most skills and skill points.
    • The overall performance in these Interactive Learning Conversations is based on the Best Path
      • → meaning that skills or skill points scored in the middle or poor paths will not count if they are not also present in the Best Path.

  • Scoring. Now, when we talk about scoring, we're referring to the process of assigning skills and skill points to decision node response options so that we can track learner's performance as they engage in these interactive learning conversations.
  • Scoring usually takes place after the full branch narrative is approved and complete and finalized. And that's because it's a little bit of a hassle to go back and score as the narrative is still in flux.
  • Now the first thing that we do when we start scoring is take a look at all of the decision nodes and within each decision node, we analyze each of the response options that are present there.
  • Here in this example, you can see that there are three different response options within this single decision node. Then we assign an individual scoring node to each of these different response options simply because each of these response options will likely yield different skill points as well as different skill point values.
  • Now what we do is analyze the text specifically within each response option and see of the skills that we are tracking for this particular conversational narrative.
  • What skills are present specifically within this body of text. And here you can see that in the first response option, we saw that there was adapt adaptability, probing questions, active listening, and open-mindedness.
  • In the second response option, we only saw two skills present, which are adaptability and active listening. And then in the final third response option here, you can see that we only saw that active listening was present.
  • Now you can also see that we can score different point values to each of these skills. And the way we do that is we sort of rate the extent to which skills are executed within that specific response option.
  • One thing you might notice is that the best path yields the most skills and skill points. Now this is a rule that we follow because the overall performance within these interactive learning conversations that score is based off of the best path.
  • That means that any skills or skill points that are not present in the best path but are scored in the middle path or the poor path, those skills and skill points will not count if they are not also present in the best path.
