Lesson information:

As you watch the video, look out for these learning points:

  • The process of editing and mixing voiceover audio

Editing the Vocal Performance

  • Edit out any mistakes or noise
  • Separating lines (from your script) into individual regions with small fades at each start and end
  • Enhance the sound using Processing / Plugins

Exporting Audio Files

  • Export each line as individual files
  • The files should be renamed and saved in a specific format before being imported into CoPilot Designer.
    • WAV, AIFF or OGG files

Video Transcript
  • Now that you've recorded your voiceover, it's time for editing and mixing. Once you have that voiceover, you wanna listen closely in your do using either speakers or headphones and listen for any mistakes that could be vocal mistake during the performance.
  • It could be the actor accidentally bumped into something while they're recording or just little pops and clicks in the audio.
  • You'll want to edit any of that out and separate each line from your script into its own individual region. Then apply a small fade at the beginning and end so that you have a separate region that will be used to create a separate file for each of these lines.
  • Once you have a separate region for every line in your script, you'll wanna be able to enhance the sound and make it better.
  • You can do this by using processing or plug-ins. Plug-ins are digital versions of outboard processing that are used within a computer.
  • They're kind of like a separate little computer program that's used within a do. There are many different types of plugins and processing out there, such as noise reduction, which is important in removing steady background noise within the recording, like just a hum that you might have in the room or an air conditioner. You can use noise reduction to get rid of that.
  • Then there's equalization or eq. That is a big important one to adjust the frequencies of the recording and bring out what frequencies sound best, reducing others that sound muddy or bad.
  • Compression will kind of take all of the recording level, squish it a bit together, and then you can bring that level up without such a big dynamic range.
  • A DSR is a plugin or outboard processing that will zone in on specific frequencies associated with sibilance, such as a harsh sh s sound.
  • So you can record those S sounds and then you use DSRs to get rid of that. And then there's normalization, which brings up the level of the whole recording to a higher level before you're going to export as individual files.
  • After you've applied plug-ins or processing, you'll want to then export each of these separate regions from your computer program as a separate individual file so that those can be imported into co-pilot designer and implemented into the program.
  • Now remember, you'll want to export these as either wave A A I F F or O G G files and preferably at 48 kilohertz sample rate, 24 bit depth.
  • Then you'll have to go through the process of renaming those files so that it'll be easy to find them once you put them in the program and match them up with the correct dialogue node.
  • To recap the editing and mixing process here, we start with editing out mistakes and extra noise in the performance. Then you apply processing and plugins to enhance the sound and make it better.
  • In many ways, you want to export each of those separate lines from your script as its own file and then rename those files to whichever naming convention you want to use to then implement them into co-pilot designer.
